If you are in Scottsdale and are looking for a nearby place to visit, this place is worthy of consideration. There is a nice gift shop you can get into for free. Insider there is a nice museum that you can visit for a fee (I believe $5 per adult). The folks there were very friendly and knowledgeable of the local area. There is some phony stuff to take pictures at (fake jail, stagecoach, Boot Hill Cemetery, etc.). There is also a church that was in the Elvis Presley film Charro. This is not the original church. The town where the church was burned down year ago. They say the church was moved here, but may have been rebuilt. There is a large figure of Elvis on the altar where you can take pics. An interesting place to check out, but if pressed for time, you won't miss much.
Had a great time touring the place. Different relics spread throughout the property. Look closely and you'll see bones, old heavy buckets, etc. Really interesting items of note: maps showing the location of the old ranches (would be awesome to see a current day overlay on that showing roads), how the Superstitions were formed including rock samples, the old church and buildings, the drag stone mill, my favorite thing was the giant photograph showing a cattle roundup shot from the same position on the property today. That was incredible! Stop by the general store for an ice cream or soda, get your squished penny from the machine, lots of places to stop and rest for us old folk. I'll have to return in cooler weather to see some of the stuff that was closed for the summer.
We really enjoyed our visit to the Superstition Mountain Museum. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We found that the museum really helped us all understand the draw and appeal of the mountain. It also helped us get a better feel for the history of the area. My daughter had read the Superstition Mountain Mystery series by Elise Broach and really wanted to visit the area. I'm so glad she did, we all found the stories and legend very interesting. The museum itself isn't very big but it's packed with information. There is also quite a bit to see on the outside, as well, including some old movie set areas. Well worth the stop.
I have stopped in here several times for a quick bite and for just some old west entertainment. It is definatly within the old west character and if you haven't been worth a visit for sure. They seem to be adding new attractions as well.
What a fun way to experience he history of the Superstition Mountain area. Everyone who works and volunteers on the grounds are knowledgeable and kind. My son loves to visit and pretend to be a cowboy for the day. The outdoor part of the museum is free to explore and the indoor is beyond reasonably priced. And the views are spectacular.
