Great kid friendly hike. My two year old twin nephews did wonderfully on the hike there. Once reaching, after playing in the small pool under waterfall, they were wore out on the trail midway back. Strongly recommend this easy satisfying family hike.
We hiked to Little Mashel Falls from this trail. It was great enjoying the 4 different types of berries and walking mostly in the shade. If you do go to Little Mashel Falls, be prepared for two things: great beauty and lots of elevation gain. While the highest elevation is less than 650 feet above your starting elevation, if you go down to see the lower falls and the middle falls (the best two) you will experience a total of over 3000 feet of elevation gain. But the beauty is worth it! And at about 5 miles round trip, it was doable even with a knee and back acting up.
Beautiful walking trail. Easy well maintained wide path for walking, biking, horseback, or running. Lots of river and pond access. Clearly marked trail to visit the waterfalls. Please be careful if you go to the falls, many have fallen and died.
Fun hike. Best to go earlier just so you have the falls to yourself.
Wide paths, easy grade for all... nice bridges. Good for mountain bikes and rugged strollers. Easy to find, good parking lot. I am taking a star off for the porta potty at the trailhead being left there on a slant, and not a little slant. It really needs servicing for other reasons, too (enough said on that.)
Seems like the trail could use a little more signage. There were many forks and we had to guess at times at the path to take.
Only made it to the Little Mashel Falls trail, and boy, was it steep. I got paranoid of encountering a bear or mountain lion... there were so many perches overlooking the trail, so I just kept making noise, to ward off their interest in pouncing. It was got very narrow and isolated, and rocky... I don't recommend it for the novice, like me. We should have just kept on the easy path...
If you want to see the falls more quickly, go at it from the other end (Waterfall park, with the parking next to the road south of this one) instead of from this trail, but if you need an easier path and have the time, use this path.
